I agree with Greg in that obviously he did have those who loved him and their loss is a tragedy.
But as for the rest of us...
I always use him as an example when I try to illustrate the nature of true evil to people. A lot of my friends ask me how can I defend people who do bad things. OK at the risk of being a closet socialist, the vast majority of my clients are poor and, well, lacking in intelligence (to put it nicely). They grew up in a world where daddy hit mommy, so it's ok. Or they grew up where Mommy drank, so they can drink. I'm not justifying what they do, I'm simply offering an explanation.
Or let me put it this way- I didn't figure out right from wrong on my own. My mom (and grandparents) taught me. If I had been raised in a world without their love and teaching and discipline, who knows how I would have turned out?
In other words, my client that steals food from Kroger.....that's wrong, it warrants a punishment, I understand and accept all of that. But I don't view it as this horrible act of evil. And it isn't like it ruins Kroger forever (yes it's still wrong, I'm trying to walk the tightrope here)
Now, when you start talking Ken Lay and Skilling and Koslowski and those cats.....in my opinion, that is true evil. These guys did know better. They were taught right from wrong. They had everything they'd ever need. They had access to all kinds of resources. And they purposely used those resources to benefit themselves while potentially ruining the lives of tens of thousands of people. These men should qualify as among the worst humans to ever walk the earth.

I said the exact same thing when I heard the news Lake. I wish I could say "I'm sorry" but I would be lying if I said that. He got better than he deserved.
Edited to correct a typo.
